Chili peppers are spicy because they contain a compound called Capsaicin, which is entirely unique to the chile pepper. Capsaicin is produced by some glands in a Chili pepper's placenta, which is located in the top portion of the pepper, just below the stem. The placenta is approximately sixteen times hotter than the rest of the pepper, and it is usually removed with the seeds.
