Added flavors are used to enhance existing flavors naturally present in foods and beverages. They are made from extracts of natural compounds. However, these natural compounds still undergo chemical processing to enhance their flavors. They are therefore partially artificial. Studies demonstrated that artificial flavors have the ability to produce adverse reactions such as behavioral disturbances in adulthood and learning disabilities in children. Although experts constantly evaluate the safety of all food flavors before they are used in food products, because it can lead to harmful effects, added flavors in food should be avoided.
