Added flavors are used to enhance existing flavors naturally present in foods and beverages. They are made from the synthesis of chemical compounds. Artificial flavors are used in small amounts in food, and are always evaluated for safety. Thus, no toxicity can occur. However, studies demonstrated that artificial flavors have the ability to produce adverse reactions such as behavioral disturbances in adulthood and learning disabilities in children. Although experts constantly evaluate the safety of all food flavors before they are used in food products, because it can lead to harmful effects, artificial flavors in food should be avoided.   Sources: 1.
