Ethoxyquin is used as an anti-oxidant to prevent food products from becoming rancid. The debate over ethoxyquin has returned in recent years, because of its wide use in pet foods. Pet owners owners were convinced of a link between sick animals and the preservative. As a result of publicity in pet magazines and newsletters, the FDA issued a statement(Nov. 2, 1989)stating that dispite some tests suggesting high levels carry a carcinogenic potential, The FDA has found no scientific or medical evidence that, if used at approved levels, is injurious to human (often used in ground and powdered chili) or animal health. The FDA did suggest that ethoxyquin needs more study and to review any new data generated on the safety of the ingredient. Source:
