Acesulfame Potassium

Also seen as Acesulfame K, Ace-K, Sunett, or Sweet One, Acesulfame Potassium is a sugar substitute that is 200 times sweeter than table sugar. It is used as a flavor enhancer and sweetener for foods. It is a low calorie food ingredient because our bodies do not metabolize it. Acesulfame K also is not consumed by bacteria so it does not contribute to tooth decay as sugar does. However, methylene chloride is used for the production of Acesulfame K, which also is used as a propellant, degreaser, and paint stripper. There are many side effects with consumption of Acesulfame K, including increased risk for cancer, triggering chronic respiratory disease, or abnormal cravings for sweets. The chemical remains stable when exposed to heat, basic, or acidic conditions. Since it is stable under high heat, manufacturers use Acesulfame K potassium to use in baking and extending shelf life. This artificial sweetener has a slight bitter aftertaste, but companies are using this with sodium ferulate to mask the bitterness. Other companies use Acesulfame K with other alternative sweeteners such as Aspartame or sucralose to control the use of it. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends the acceptable daily intake of 15mg/kg of body weight/day.

Insect-derived Coloring Causes Severe Allergic Reactions



Food colorings that cause severe allergic reactions should be disclosed clearly on labels or possibly banned, a national health-advocacy group is telling the Food and Drug Administration.



The colorings come in two forms, cochineal extract or carmine. Both are derived from female cochineal beetles, which are raised in Peru, the Canary Islands, and elsewhere. They provide a pink, red, or purple color to foods ranging from ice cream and yogurt to fruit drinks and the aperitif Campari, as well as to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.



In the past several years, doctors in Michigan, Switzerland, and France have proven that the colorings can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, asthma, and anaphylactic shock. The prevalence of allergic reactions is not known.



The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a nonprofit organization based in Washington, today petitioned the FDA to either revoke approval of the colorings or require that they be clearly labeled by name. Currently, they may be declared on labels as "artificial color" or "color added."

Disodium guanylate (E627), also known as sodium 5'-guanylate and disodium 5'-guanylate, is the disodium salt of the flavor enhancer guanosine monophosphate (GMP). Disodium guanylate is a food additive and is commonly used in conjunction with glutamic acid (monosodium glutamate, MSG).



As it is a fairly expensive additive, it is not used independently of glutamic acid; if disodium guanylate is present in a list of ingredients but MSG does not appear to be, it is likely that glutamic acid is provided as part of another ingredient such as a processed soy protein complex. It is often added to foods in conjunction with disodium inosinate; the combination is known as disodium 5'-ribonucleotides.



Disodium guanylate is produced from dried fish or dried seaweed and is often added to instant noodles, potato chips and other snacks, savoury rice, tinned vegetables, cured meats, and packaged soup.

A lake is a solid, non water soluble form of a dye. It's produced by mixing the dye with Aluminum Hydroxide. By itself Aluminum Hydroxide is a safe food ingredient and it's often sold as an antacid. When combined with Dye, the chemicals form a deep powder that can be applied to the outsides of tablets, gumballs and other solids. This term is usually followed by a specific food item. The flavor shows the consumer that the product has the taste of that specific food item, but not necessarily containing all the ingredients to produce that flavor. For example, butter flavor is not really butter added into the food. Dried food can be used as flavoring such as cheddar cheese. Movie popcorn has butter flavoring added to it, which is flavored vegetable oil and much cheaper than actual butter. Ingredients of butter flavoring include everything but butter such as partially hydrogenated soybean oil, Beta Carotene, TBHQ, Dimethylpolysiloxane, etc. The resulting flavor is produced, but the health risks are increased. Sorbitol

Sorbitol is a type of sugar alcohol that is also found naturally in fruits. It is a white crystalline powder that is typically used as an artificial sweetener like in sugar-free chewing gum. It is considered a nutritive sweetner because it has 4 calories/gram like table sugar. Sorbitol is also used in toothpaste, tobacco, toiletries, and cosmetics. It is a stable substance and can withstand high temperatures so baked goods do not burn easily. In addition, sorbitol has many other functions such as a dispensing substances in textiles, whitening teeth, prevent staleness in candy, or maintain adhesiveness of a product. Diabetics can ingest sorbitol because of its slow digestion time. Many complaints have surrounded sorbitol because of excess consumption. Too much sorbitol (as little as 10 grams per day) can lead to irritable bowel syndrome with symptoms including flatulence and bloating. Sorbitol is a natural laxative since consumption of excess fruits leads to the general effects. It is not well absorbed, so excess water enters the gastrointestinal tract, leading to diarrhea or flatulence. Sorbitol is safe to consume but the amounts consumed should be wary.
