A note about water: More and more evidence shows the benifit of being well hydrated.

Studies show that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated (likely applies to half the world's population), leading to possible health problems such as fatigue. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger, leading to over-eating. And even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.



Bottled Water: Some types of bottled water are not subject to the same regulations as tap water. These are regulated as food products, and their regulations are largely related to sanitary food handling and processing practices. Bottled water manufacturers will provide a detailed report on the quality of their product to consumers who call to request it.

Rice is a staple food in much of the world, and for good reason: with the addition of some vegetables and perhaps a bit of meat or fish, a bowl of rice makes a tasty, satisfying, and nutritious meal. Brown rice, which has only the outer hull removed, retains--along with its bran layer--an impressive variety of vitamins and minerals, including niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and even some vitamin E. Brown rice contains only a small amount of protein, but that is of good quality because of its relatively high level of the amino acid lysine. Because the bran is not milled away, brown rice contains four times the amount of insoluble fiber found in white rice--a prime reason for eating brown rice instead of white.



Varieties



Long-grain: Long-grain brown rice stays firm when cooked. It is suitable for most western and Indian recipes, and makes a fine side dish.



Medium-grain: Medium-grain rice, found in Latin and some Asian recipes, is the main ingredient in commercially produced cold rice cereals and cakes. Its grains are plumper than those of long-grain rice, and it works well in soups and stews.



Short-grain: Short-grain, or sticky rice, is most often found in Asian recipes; because it sticks together when cooked, it's easier to eat with chopsticks.



Sweet rice: Sweet rice, or mochi rice, is a Japanese rice (also grown in the U.S.) that is used for desserts. It cooks in about half the time required for long-grain brown rice.



Aromatic rices: This category includes domestic rices such as Texmati and imported versions, including the renowned Indian basmati and Thai jasmine rices. Aromatic rices gives off a nutty-sweet fragrance as they cook, and have a sweet, delicate flavor.



Quick-cooking: Quick-cooking brown rice has been precooked so that it's ready in about 10 minutes.



Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Tricalcium phosphate is a compound with formula Ca3(PO4)2. It is also known as calcium orthophosphate, tertiary calcium phosphate, tribasic calcium phosphate, or "bone ash" (calcium phosphate being one of the main combustion products of bone).



It has an alpha an alpha' and a beta crystal form, the alpha state being formed at high temperatures. As rock, it is found in Whitlockite.



Tricalcium phosphate is used in powdered spices as an anti-caking agent.



Calcium phosphate is an important raw material for the production of phosphoric acid and fertilizers, for example in the Odda process.



Calcium phosphate is also a raising agent (food additives) E341. Is a mineral salt found in rocks and bones, it is used in cheese products.



It is also used as a nutritional supplement. There is some debate about the different bioavailabilities of the different calcium salts.



It is commonly used in porcelain and dental powders, and medically as an antacid or calcium supplement, although calcium carbonate is more common in this regard.



Another practical application of the compound is its use in gene transfection. The calcium ions can make a cell competent (a euphemism for "rip holes in its membrane") to allow exogenous genes to enter the cell by diffusion. A heat shock afterwards then invokes the cell to repair itself. This is a quick and easy method for transfection, albeit a rather inefficient one.

Zinc gluconate is used to treat and to prevent zinc deficiencies.



Zinc is a naturally occurring mineral. and is found naturally in meats, unleavened breads, legumes and whole grains. Zinc is important for growth and for the development and health of body tissues.

Vitamin A.

Essential in vision; enhances immunity by protecting the body from bacteria and viruses; boosts the production of white blood cells; helps build and maintain bone.



Richest sources of retinal are liver, fish liver oils, whole and fortified milk, and eggs. Carotenoids (such as beta-carotene) that the body uses to make vitamin A are abundant in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, and green leafy vegetables.



Researchers are investigating the links on vitamin A's ability to boost the immune system and fight cancer, and the results look promising. The dark side of this is people are taking megadoses of vitamin A mistakenly believing that it can ward off or cure disease, often doing serious liver damage. People can achieve the level of beta-carotene in the studies simply by eating the 5 to 9 servings recommended by health authorities.

Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, is required to complete several reactions in the energy cycle. Reddening of the lips with cracks at the corners of the mouth, inflammation of the tongue, and a greasy, scaly inflammation of the skin are common symptoms of deficiency.Riboflavin (B2)- Classic riboflavin deficiency involves the lips, tongue, eyes, skin and nervous system. Vision changes, cheliosis (tiny lesions in the mouth or cracks in the corners of the mouth) tongue inflammation and discomfort eating or swallowing.

Required for red blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration and growth. Important for good muscle tone. Involved in metabolism of protein, protein fats, and carbohydrates. Necessary for good vision, skin, hair and nails.

Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is important to good health. It helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells, and is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells . Vitamin B12 is bound to the protein in food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases B12 from protein during digestion. Once released, B12 combines with a substance called intrinsic factor (IF) before it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Good sources include meat, particularly liver, salmon, cod, milk, cheese, eggs, yeast extract, and some fortified breakfast cereals.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) is a water soluble vitamin, although small amounts are stored in the liver. It is a member of the B group of vitamins and is vital for the formation of red blood cells, for nerve cells, and the recycling of certain important enzymes.

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that you need to prevent rickets. It can be used to treat hypoparathyroidism (underactive parathyroid gland), psoriasis (scaly skin), osteoporosis (bone loss), osteomalacia (soft bones), and scleroderma (hardening of the skin and certain organs).



Other names for Vitamin D include: Calciferol, Ergocalciferol, Cholecalciferol, Vitamin D2, or Vitamin D3.



A "vitamin" by definition is a substance regularly required by the body in small amounts but which the body cannot make and is, therefore, required to be supplied in the daily diet. Technically the molecular species classified as vitamin D is not really a vitamin because it can be produced by exposure of the skin to sunlight. However, for nutritional and public health reasons, vitamin D continues to be classified officially as a vitamin.



Types: There are two chemical forms of vitamin D, namely vitamin D2 (sometimes referred to as ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (sometimes referred to a cholecalciferol). The natural form of vitamin D for animals and man is vitamin D3 that is produced in their bodies from cholesterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol. An alternative vitamin D2 is derived from the yeast sterol ergosterol by chemical procedures.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)



Also known as bicarbonate of soda, baking soda is used as a LEAVENER in baked goods. When combined with an acid ingredient such as buttermilk, yogurt or molasses, baking soda produces carbon dioxide gas bubbles, thereby causing a dough or batter to rise. Because it reacts immediately when moistened, it should always be mixed with the other dry ingredients before adding any liquid; the resulting batter should be placed in the oven immediately. At one time, baking soda was used in the cooking water of green vegetables to preserve their color. That practice was discontinued, however, when it was discovered that baking soda destroys the vitamin C content of vegetables.



Baking Soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a naturally occurring substance that is present in all living things--it helps living things maintain the pH balance necessary for life. Baking Soda is made from soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate. The soda ash is obtained in one of two ways: it can be manufactured by passing carbon dioxide and ammonia through a concentrated solution of sodium chloride (table salt). Whether the soda ash is mined or processed, it is dissolved into a solution through which carbon dioxide is bubbled, and sodium bicarbonate precipitates out, forming Baking Soda

Amylases are enzymes which break down carbohydrates eg starch and glycogen into fermentable sugars. This function of alpha amylase is used widely in industry. is used for the preparation of flour improvers and subsequently in flour milling and baking; also, to a lesser extent in starch hydrolysis and alcohol production.

PROTEASE is responsible for digesting proteins in your food, which is probably one of the most difficult substances to metabolize. Proteolytic enzymes are very important in digestion as they breakdown the protein foods to liberate the amino acids needed by the body. Additionally, proteolytic enzymes have been used for a long time in various forms of therapy. Their use in medicine is gaining more and more attention as several clinical studies are indicating their benefits in oncology, inflammatory conditions, blood rheology control, and immune regulation.

Natural food enzymes that, when taken with gassy foods, help reduce flatulence-sometimes even stopping it before it begins. Gas-producing foods like beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, grains and onions cause trouble because they contain hard- or impossible-to-digest complex sugars (see CARBOHYDRATE) that ferment in the large intestine. There are specific enzymes that break down protein, fat and carbohydrate; these are protease, amylase and lipase respectively.

Calcium chloride is a colorless or white solid that is produced as a by-product of the manufacture of sodium carbonate or from reactions between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate. The anhydrous compound is commonly used as a drying agent, absorbing water until it dissolves into a liquid. This characteristic makes it effective in settling road dust. When spread in the form of a powder or flakes, it absorbs more than its own weight of water, forming a liquid that keeps the road wet. It also is used as a food preservative, treating aquarium water, and for de-icing roads.
