Naproxen sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). As with other NSAIDs, naproxen sodium works by blocking the production of the substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. It is an effective analgesic.



When taken as directed, naproxen sodium is an effective pain reliever. However, you need to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are under a doctor’s care for a serious condition, are taking another drug, or are taking any other product that contains naproxen sodium or any other pain reliever or fever reducer.



You can find naproxen sodium as a pain reliever in over-the-counter (OTC) cough-cold medicines, and in some prescription anti-inflammatory drugs. It is used for the temporarily relief of minor aches and pains, including headache, muscular aches, menstrual cramps, toothache, backache, and the minor pain of arthritis and the common cold. It also temporarily reduces fever.

The ingredients in a product that are specifically designed to achieve the product performance objectives.

For example, an antacids active ingredient is calcium carbonate. Antacids may also contain: corn starch, talc, artificial colors etc...that do not help with acid reduction.

D&C Yellow No. 10 is manufactured by condensing quinaldine with phthalic anhydride to give the unsulfonated dye, which is then sulfonated with oleum.

The color additive D&C Yellow No. 10 may

be safely used for coloring drugs generally in amounts consistent with current good manufacturing practice. Allowed in Drugs and Cosmetics only. Banned in Foods.



The manufacturer doesn't want the color to run off if the pill gets a little wet. The answer is to use a dye in a lake form.



A lake is a solid, non water soluble form of a dye. It's produced by mixing the dye with Aluminum Hydroxide. By itself Aluminum Hydroxide is a safe food ingredient and it's often sold as an antacid. When combined with Dye, the chemicals form a deep powder that can be applied to the outsides of tablets, gumballs and other solids. You may also notice this form listed in the ingredients as "Aluminum Lake

EDTA is a widely used acronym for the chemical compound ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (which has many other names, see Table). EDTA is a polyamino carboxylic acid with the formula [CH2N(CH2CO2H)2]2. This colourless, water-soluble solid is widely used to dissolve scale. Its usefulness arises because of its role as a chelating agent, i.e. its ability to "sequester" metal ions such as Ca2+ and Fe3+. After being bound by EDTA, metal ions remain in solution but exhibit diminished reactivity. EDTA is produced as several salts, notably disodium EDTA and calcium disodium EDTA.



In industry, EDTA is mainly used to sequester metal ions in aqueous solution. In the textile industry, it prevents metal ion impurities from modifying colours of dyed products. In the pulp and paper industry, EDTA inhibits the ability of metal ions, especially Mn2+, from catalyzing the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide, which is used in "chlorine-free bleaching." Similarly, EDTA is added to some food as a preservative or stabilizer to prevent catalytic oxidative decolouration which is catalyzed by metal ions.[8] In personal care products, it is added to cosmetics to improve their stability toward air.[9] In Soft drinks containing ascorbic acid and sodium benzoate, EDTA mitigates formation of benzene (a carcinogen).[10]



The reduction of water hardness in laundry applications and the dissolution of scale in boilers both rely on EDTA and related complexants to bind Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions as well as other metal ions. Once bound to EDTA, these metal centers tend not to form precipitates or to interfere with the action of the detergents. For similar reasons, cleaning solutions often contain EDTA.



The solubilization of ferric ions near neutral pH is accomplished using EDTA. This property is useful in agriculture including hydroponics, especially in calcareous soils. Otherwise, at near neutral pH, iron(III) forms insoluble salts, which are less bioavailable. Aqueous [Fe(edta)]- is used for removing ("scrubbing") hydrogen sulfide from gas streams. This conversion is achieved by oxidizing the hydrogen sulfur to elemental sulfur, which is non-volatile:



2 [Fe(edta)]- + H2S ? 2 [Fe(edta)]2- + S + 2 H+

In this application the ferric center is reduced to its ferrous derivative, which can then be reoxidized by air. Similarly, nitrogen oxides are removed from gas streams using [Fe(edta)]2-. The oxidizing properties of [Fe(edta)]- are also exploited in photography where it is used to solubilize silver particles.[4]



EDTA was an most important chelating agents used in the separation of the lanthanide metals by ion-exchange chromatography. Perfected by F.H. Spedding et al. in 1954, the method relies on the steady increase in stability constant of the lanthanide EDTA complexes with atomic number. Using sulfonated polystyrene beads and copper(II) as a retaining ion, EDTA causes the lanthanides to migrate down the column of resin while separating into bands of pure lanthanide. The lanthanides elute in order of decreasing atomic number. Due to the expense of this method, relative to counter-current solvent extraction, ion-exchange is now used only to obtain the highest purities of lanthanide (typically greater than 4N, 99.99%

Edible ink is ink that is safe to eat. It is used to decorate food, most often baked goods such as cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Novelty baked goods such as photograph cakes are made using edible ink.



Food colorings and dyes, made from natural and synthetic sources, have been used for centuries, and are the edible inks most people are familiar with. Edible inks for use in printers, those used to reproduce photographs onto baked goods, were developed in the early years of the 2000s. Commercial bakeries were first to adopt the technology, which is now available for home use.



Some models of Canon and Epson printers can print edible inks. Supplies needed to print in edible ink, besides a compatible printer, are icing sheets and edible ink cartridges. You can also buy software specifically designed for designing and printing images in edible ink. The icing sheets are made of sugar, or cornstarch and corn syrup. They are wafer thin and come in different sizes. Edible inks come in different colors, and the printer can use the inks to produce a variety of hues.



Once an image is printed on an icing sheet, the decorator places it on top of the frosted cake, cupcake or cookie. The icing sheet will seamlessly absorb into the frosting. Icing sheets and edible inks are made in the U.S. from non-toxic FDA approved ingredients and are usually kosher.

Blue 1

Commonly known as Brilliant Blue FCF or E133, Blue 1 is found in beverages, dairy products, jellies, etc. as a food coloring. It can produce various shades of green according to the manufacture’s wishes in conjunction with Yellow 5. It was originally derived from coal tar, but now made from an oil base such as petroleum. All dyes are considered additives by the FDA through the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) since it is not used for the purpose of consumption, but to improve the appearance of the product. The synthetic dye does not fade as easily as other natural sources of blue dye such as indigo and is more preferred by the manufacturer. The consumption of artificial dyes has been thought to increase hyperactivity in children. It has been banned in much of Europe, but is still considered legal according to the European Union and the United States.

FD&C Yellow No.6; used in cereals, bakery, sweets, snack foods, ice cream, drinks and canned fish; synthetic; also in many medications including Berocca, Polaramine, Ventolin syrup; side effects are urticaria (hives), rhinitis (runny nose), nasal congestion, allergies, hyperactivity, kidney tumours, chromosomal damage, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, indigestion, distaste for food; seen increased incidence of tumours in animals; banned in Norway

Industry-sponsored animal tests indicated that this dye, the third most widely used, causes tumors of the adrenal gland and kidney. In addition, small amounts of several carcinogens contaminate Yellow 6. However, the FDA reviewed those data and found reasons to conclude that Yellow 6 does not pose a significant cancer risk to humans. Yellow 6 may also cause occasional allergic reactions.

Gelatin

Gelatin is derived from collagen, which is mainly involved with connective tissues and bones. It is known for its capability to gel and form semi-solids with its solution. The type of gelatin depends on the source of where it came from. Many of these sources include cattle bones, cattle hides, pork skins, and dried crushed bone. Cattle hides are the least used source for gelatin, while crushed bone is used mostly for photographic or pharmaceutical applications. Pork skin is the most commonly used raw source for edible gelatin in North America. The gelatin produced, Type A gelatin is extracted from the pork skin through a complex process involving acid treatment, washing, sterilization, and more. Because of the use of animal as a raw material source, gelatin should be restricted from diets concerning animal by-products.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) are polymers having an identical structure, and are the most commercially important polyethers. Poly(ethylene glycol) or poly(ethylene oxide) refers to an oligomer or polymer of ethylene oxide. PEG and PEO are liquids or low-melting solids, depending on their molecular weights. Both are prepared by polymerization of ethylene oxide. While PEG and PEO with different molecular weights find use in different applications and have different physical properties (e.g. viscosity) due to chain length effects, their chemical properties are nearly identical. Derivatives of PEG and PEO are in common use, the most common derivative being the methyl ether (methoxypoly(ethylene glycol)), abbreviated mPEG.



Poly(ethylene glycol) is non-toxic and is used in a variety of products. It is the basis of a number of laxatives (e.g. macrogol-containing products such as Movicol® and polyethylene glycol 3350, or MiraLax® or GlycoLax). It is the basis of many skin creams, as cetomacrogol, and sexual lubricants, frequently combined with glycerin. Whole bowel irrigation (polyethylene glycol with added electrolytes) is used for bowel preparation before surgery or colonoscopy and drug overdoses

Talc is a mineral, produced by the mining of talc rocks and then processed by crushing, drying and milling. Processing eliminates a number of trace minerals from the talc, but does not separate minute fibers which are very similar to asbestos.

Talc is toxic. Talc particles cause tumors in human ovaries and lungs. Numerous studies have shown a strong link between frequent use of talc in the female genital area and ovarian cancer. Talc particles are able to move through the reproductive system and become imbedded in the lining of the ovary. Researchers have found talc particles in ovarian tumors and have found that women with ovarian cancer have used talcum powder in their genital area more frequently than healthy women.2



Talc poses a health risk when exposed to the lungs. Talc miners have shown higher rates of lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses from exposure to industrial grade talc, which contains dangerous silica and asbestos. The common household hazard posed by talc is inhalation of baby powder by infants. Since the early 1980s, records show that several thousand infants each year have died or become seriously ill following accidental inhalation of baby powder.3



Q. What about infants?



A. Talc is used on babies because it absorbs unpleasant moisture. Clearly, dusting with talcum powder endangers an infant's lungs at the prospect of inhalation. Exposing children to this carcinogen is unnecessary and dangerous.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a water-soluble polymer made from the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone,



The monomer is extremely toxic to aquatic life. However, the polymer PVP was used as a blood plasma expander for trauma victims after the first half of the 20th century.[clarification needed]



It is used as a binder in many pharmaceutical tablets; it simply passes through the body when taken orally. However, autopsies have found that crospovidone does contribute to pulmonary vascular injury in substance abusers who have injected pharmaceutical tablets intended for oral consumption.[1] The long-term effects of crospovidone within the lung are unknown. PVP added to Iodine forms a complex called (Povidone-iodine[2]) that possesses disinfectant properties. This complex is used in various products like solutions, ointment, pessaries, liquid soaps and surgical scrubs. It is known for instance under the trade name Betadine.



PVP binds to polar molecules exceptionally well, owing to its polarity. This has led to its application in coatings for photo-quality ink-jet papers and transparencies, as well as in inks for inkjet printers.



PVP is also used in personal care products, such as shampoos and toothpastes, in paints, and adhesives that must be moistened, such as old-style postage stamps and envelopes. It has also been used in contact lens solutions and in steel-quenching solutions. PVP is the basis of the early formulas for hair sprays and hair gels, and still continues to be a component of some.



As a food additive, PVP is a stabilizer and has E number E1201. PVPP is E1202. It is also used in the wine industry as a fining agent for white wine. Other references state that as polyvinyl pyrrolidone and its derivatives are fully from mineral synthetic[3] origin. Therefore, its use in the production should not be a problem for vegans.



In molecular biology, PVP can be used as a blocking agent during Southern blot analysis as a component of Denhardt's buffer. It is also exceptionally good at adsorbing polyphenols during DNA purification. Polyphenols are common in many plant tissues and can deactivate proteins if not removed and therefore inhibit many downstream reactions like PCR.



PVP is also used in many technical applications:



as adhesive in glue stick and hot melts

as special additive for batteries, ceramics, fiberglass, inks, inkjet paper and in the chemical-mechanical planarization process

as emulsifier and disintegrant for solution polymerization

as photoresist for cathode ray tubes (CRT)

use in aqueous metal quenching

for production of membranes, such as dialysis and water purification filters

as binder and complexation agent in agro applications such as crop protection, seed treatment and coating

as a thickening agent in tooth whitening gels[4]

as an aid for increasing the solubility of drugs in liquid and semi-liquid dosage forms (syrups, soft gelatine capsules) and as an inhibitor of recrystallisation

as an additive to Doro's RNA extraction buffer
