The holiday season is in full swing and as we’re decking the halls and getting in the spirit, we’re probably indulging just a bit. This season is chock full of treats! And we all have our personal favorites. Some of us bake gingerbread and put together elaborately decorated houses. Others bake a variety of different holiday cookies. While others enjoy holiday breads like cranberry and pumpkin.
Eggnog is a traditional holiday favorite. Whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic, eggnog can be found in our grocery stores or can be made in our own kitchens. Many enjoy this rich holiday beverage in the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year’s. FoodFacts.com thought this would be a good place to start our holiday food and drink explorations since, sadly, for those who love eggnog just a little packs a pretty big punch in both ingredients and nutritional content.
Let’s take a look at the average eggnog found on our grocery shelves. A typical ingredient list can look like this:
Milk Ingredients, Sugar, Egg(s) Yolks Frozen, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Spice(s), Flavor(s) Natural, Color(s)
There are a few items on that list we generally like to avoid. And, frankly, the nutrition label is worse than the ingredient list.
One cup contains:
Saturated Fat: 7g or 35% of your Recommended Daily Intake
Sugar : 34g or a little more than 8 teaspoons of sugar
We’d like for our holiday cheer to be a little … well, cheerier. Wouldn’t you?
Try making a batch of your own holiday eggnog at home. It isn’t difficult. It really tastes better and you’ll be a lot happier with the nutritional profile. Here’s what you’ll need:
4 cups skim milk
1/2-1 cup good quality egg substitute
1/4 cup sucralose (Splenda)
3 tablespoons good quality instant vanilla pudding mix
2 teaspoons good quality bourbon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Here’s what to do:
- Place all of the ingredients in a blender, and blend for 30-60 seconds, or until smooth. Chill for several hours.
- Shake or stir eggnog well to blend before serving.
And here’s the difference in the nutritional content per cup:
Saturated Fat: 0g
While the profile on our eggnog remake is approximate (based on the pudding brand chosen – there are natural and organic options), you really won’t be far off from this. And there’s quite a difference between this version and the container in the refrigerator section of your grocery store.
