Sandwich meat used in Walmart sandwiches recalled

A New York company is recalling 380,000 pounds of lunch meat to be used in sandwiches sold at Walmart stores nationwide because the meat may be contaminated with Listeria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced.

Zemco Industries of Buffalo distributed the meat to delis, where it was used in sandwiches sold under the Walmart’s Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches brand. Listeria in food can cause a high fever, severe headache, a stiff neck and nausea in the young, frail or people with weakened immune systems. In rare cases, it can cause listeriosis, which can be fatal, the USDA says.

The USDA said Georgia food inspectors took a retail sample that tested positive for Listeria. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has so far received no reports of illnesses connected with eating the meats.

In a statement sent to Consumer Ally, Walmart said “the safety of customers is a top priority at Walmart, and that includes offering safe, high quality foods at the most affordable prices. Upon learning of a voluntary recall conducted by our supplier Zemco Industries … We immediately instructed stores to remove the impacted product from shelves.

“The recall does not involve individual retail packages of deli meat, but does impact Marketside Grab and Go sandwiches… Each of these half and whole sandwiches have a sell by date of August 25, 2010 or before,” Walmart said. “We encourage customers who recently purchased this item to return it for a full refund.”

The recalled products include:

* 25.5-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Black Forest Ham with Natural Juices coated with Caramel Color” with the number 17800 1300.
* 28.49-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Hot Ham, Hard Salami, Pepperoni, Sandwich Peppers” with the number 17803 1300.
* 32.67-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Virginia Brand Ham with Natural Juices, made in New York, Fully-Cooked Bacon, Sandwich Pickles, Sandwich Peppers” with the number 17804 1300.
* 25.5-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Angus Roast Beef coated with Caramel Color” with the number 17805 1300.

The packages also have vendor number “398412808″ and the USDA mark of inspection. The meat products were produced from June 18 to July 2, and have “use by” dates ranging from Aug. 20 to Sept. 10, 2010.
