Eat Healthy and Affordably

Eat Healthy and Affordably | Foodfacts.com

Foodfacts.com believes that healthy eating does not have to cost you more money.  Here are some smart shopping tactics that can help you save money and eat healthier.

Take the time to compare prices. Evaluate the food products that you consume every day.

Whether it is produce, milk, cereal or bread, decide which products make up the core of your diet. The next time you are in the supermarket, check out the natural foods section or visit your local natural foods market. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that organic milk does not cost significantly more than your normal brand and, considering the huge health benefits (no hormones, pesticides or antibiotics), this is a great place to start, especially if you have children.

* Prioritize the items that you feel would benefit your family the most, buy in season, be flexible, and shop at local food co-ops.

* Stay on the lookout for coupons.

* Keep an eye for sales.

* Buy in bulk.

* Skip convenience food; it’s much more expensive than making things from raw ingredients.

* Make meals in big batches and freeze in meal-sized portions.

* Eat more of every fruit and vegetable, including cauliflower stalks, greens, potato skins, and citrus zest. It is good, quality food, and it would be a shame to waste it!

* Make a shopping list, and stick to it! The little snack foods and extra items can actually be the items that threaten your food budget.

Bonus Tip: Check it out for yourself and become a food detective. If you come across an ingredient that you cannot precisely identify exactly where it comes from and what it is, do a Google search with the ingredient and “side effects” and see what you discover. That usually makes the choice pretty simple.
